Hungary vs Portugal - LIVE!

Five years after their memorable extra-time triumph over hosts France, Portugal finally begin their European Championship title defence this evening.

Fernando Santos’ side are at Budapest’s Puskas Arena for their Euro 2020 Group F opener and will be expected to make a strong start to the tournament against underdogs Hungary.

Portugal insist that the extra burden of expectation as holders with a talented squad spearheaded by Cristiano Ronaldo will not weigh them down as they also compete with fellow European powerhouses France and Germany in the so-called ‘Group of Death’.

But they could still face a tricky test against a Hungary team that will have no pressure on them at all, with most not giving them even a slight hope of reaching the knockout stages.

The Hungarians are competing at the Euros for only the second time since 1972, though they did reach the last 16 last time around, drawing 3-3 with Portugal in a thrilling contest en route to a heavy defeat by Belgium.

Hardly the biggest surprise of the tournament, but Corinne Diacre, UEFA technical observer, has named Cristiano Ronaldo Star of the Match for "all the chances and the goals".

19:14 , Giuseppe Muro

Portugal's 3-0 win over Hungary is the joint-biggest win by the reigning champions of the European Championships in their first match of the tournament, equalling the Soviet Union's 3-0 win over Denmark in 1964.

With Germany and France to come in Group F, that late show could be crucial in the final make-up of the ‘group of death’.

Hungary showed this evening they will be no pushover when they play Germany and France.

Another record-breaking night for Ronaldo as Portugal kick-off with a win.

GOAL! Hungary 0-3 Portugal | Ronaldo, 90+2 mins

18:50 , Giuseppe Muro

Another goal for Ronaldo to seal it. Portugal make a winning start to their European Championship defence.

GOAL! Hungary 0-2 Portugal | Ronaldo (pen), 87 mins

18:44 , Giuseppe Muro

Another record for Ronaldo, who becomes the all-time leading scorer at the Euros with his 10th goal at the Euros.

Penalty to Portugal!

18:43 , Giuseppe Muro

86 mins: It’s all gone wrong for Hungary. Silva is brought down inside the box and Portugal have a penalty.

GOAL! Hungary 0-1 Portugal | Guerreiro, 85 mins

18:42 , Giuseppe Muro

Heartbreak for Hungary. The reigning champion have snatched it. It is a cruel blow for Hungary. Guerreiro's strike inside the box takes a wicked deflection and goes into the corner of the net. No chance for Gulacsi.

18:39 , Giuseppe Muro

81 mins: Hungary have the ball in the net! But the flag is up! Substitute Schon beats Patricio on the breakaway and the 60,000+ fans think they have lift-off but their celebrations are cut short. VAR check it but replays show he was offside.

18:36 , Giuseppe Muro

77 mins: Ronaldo wants a penalty! He is convinced there was a handball from Fiola as the pair challenge for a ball over the top. The defender’s hand was raised but there’s no way that was deliberate and the referee, and VAR, says no penalty.

18:31 , Giuseppe Muro

73 mins: Just for a moment there, there was a bit of worry in the Portugal defence. Kleinheisler does well down the left and crossed into a dangerous position in the box. Szalai is unmarked four yards out but Patricio is able to gather the ball.

18:28 , Giuseppe Muro

70 mins: A change for Portugal. Off goes Bernardo Silva, on comes Rafa Silva. The Benfica winger will bring some pace.

Into the final 20 minutes…

Another save from Gulacsi!

18:25 , Giuseppe Muro

67 mins: That’s the first time Fernandes has been able to turn and get a shot away. It’s heading towards the bottom corner but Gulacsi gets down low to his right to tip the ball wide. Another good stop from the Hungary goalkeeper.

18:23 , Giuseppe Muro

Hungary were viewed as an easy three points for Portugal, Germany and France in Group F but, as Portugal are finding out, that is not the case.

How long will it be before we see Atletico Madrid man Joao Felix?

18:22 , Giuseppe Muro

65 mins: There’s still no way through for Portugal. Some more passing from the holders but as soon as it comes into the Hungary box there is no space for Fernandes and Hungary hack the ball away.

18:18 , Giuseppe Muro

That was better from Hungary, who are getting forward more than they did in the first half. Into the final 30 minutes.

18:18 , Giuseppe Muro

57 mins: Sallai gets onto a loose ball outside the Portugal area and hits a first-time effort at goal straight at Patricio.

18:12 , Giuseppe Muro

55 mins: Sallai goes down are a coming together with Dias. The Portugal man is on a yellow card but there was no intent to hurt Sallai as they came together as they challenged a ball over the top.

18:11 , Giuseppe Muro

53 mins: Silva and Fernandes have been shackled pretty well so far by Hungary, who were unbeaten in 11 games before the tournament began. Maybe we are seeing why.

18:08 , Giuseppe Muro

51 mins: Szalai has a go from long range but shoots straight at Patricio. The Wolves goalkeeper was never really going to be troubled from there.

18:05 , Giuseppe Muro

47 mins: Another save from Gulacsi! Pepe rises highest to meet a Fernandes corner but the Hungary goalkeeper gets down to his right to make a decent save.

18:03 , Giuseppe Muro

46 mins: We’re back underway in Budapest. No changes from either side at the break.

18:03 , Giuseppe Muro

With Germany and France to play next, Portugal really need to win this evening. There’s no doubt that Hungary have been inspired by the crowd and by the noise in the stadium, but can they keep this up?

Half time | Hungary 0-0 Portugal

17:47 , Giuseppe Muro

Hungary survive until half-time. Portugal have dominated the first half but they have been unable to first a breakthrough. Ronaldo still can’t believe he missed that chance at the end of the half. A frustrating first 45 minutes for the holders.

Huge chance for Ronaldo!

17:45 , Giuseppe Muro

43 mins: Oh, how has he missed that? That was a sitter.

A cross into the box from Fernades reaches Ronaldo six yards out in the middle of the goal with only Gulacsi to beat. Someone he shanks his effort over the bar. He can’t believe he’s missed that. That’s a huge let-off for Hungary.

17:41 , Giuseppe Muro

40 mins: A big save from Gulacsi! Jota does well to turn and swivel inside the area but his left-foot shot goes straight at Gulacsi and the Hungary goalkeeper saves with his legs. Good play from Semedo down the right there to set up Jota.

17:38 , Giuseppe Muro

38 mins: Almost 40 minutes on the clock and we have our first yellow card of the evening. It goes to Manchester City defender Dias for a robust challenge. It looked like he got a touch on the ball. His foot was a bit high but that looked a bit harsh.

17:37 , Giuseppe Muro

37 mins: A good cross into the area and Szalai flicks a header goalwards but it is straight at Patricio. A comfortable save for the Wolves goalkeeper

17:36 , Giuseppe Muro

36 mins: Having soaked up all the Portugal pressure, Szalai wins a free kick after a mazy run in the Portugal half. A good crossing opportunity for the hosts.

17:34 , Giuseppe Muro

34 mins: Ouch! Jota has just booted the ball straight into the face of Lovrencsics from point-blank range. That looked like it hurt but the Hungary man is ok. Portugal back in possession…

A sight to beyond

29 mins: It is persistent pressure from Portugal. Apart from that early shot from Jota though, Gulacsi has not been tested. Ronaldo has been busy without having any efforts on goal.

17:28 , Giuseppe Muro

26 mins: Portugal want a penalty as Silva goes down in the box but the referee waves play on. Good decision. Orban got a touch on the ball and the was a well-timed tackle. Portugal continue to probe though. How much longer can Hungary hold out?

17:25 , Giuseppe Muro

Still goalless but it has been a full-blooded affair so far in Budapest

22 mins: Portugal are having a sustained spell of pressure now. A corner into the box is headed away but Hungary are struggling to get out and pose any sort of threat down the other end. Until Fernandes gives away a foul to give Hungary some brief respite.

17:22 , Giuseppe Muro

Former Fulham midfielder Zoltan Gera is part of the Hungary coaching team. A bit of a Premier League cult hero!

17:21 , Giuseppe Muro

20 mins: A big chance for Ronaldo! Pepe plays a ball over the top and Ronaldo volleys goal wards and forces a save from Gulacsi. But the flag is up so it wouldn’t have counted anyway.

17:20 , Giuseppe Muro

17 mins: The game has settled into a pattern now of Portugal dominating possession and trying to make something happen in the final third, and Hungary defending. Much like Spain versus Sweden yesterday.

17:16 , Giuseppe Muro

Portugal have been on top so far.

Only two of the last six holders have won their opening game at the Euros, Spain in 2016 and France in 2004.

But Portugal have had a lot more of the ball so far and have just enjoyed a long spell of possession as they try to pull Hungary out of shape.

17:12 , Giuseppe Muro

9 mins: Lovrencsics tackles Ronaldo down by the corner flag and there’s a huge roar from the 61,000 fans inside the stadium. Another wry smile from Ronaldo, who will be intent on silencing the crowd this evening.

7 mins: This has been a cracking start to the game. There have been some full-blooded challenges from both sides already and there’s no doubt that the players feeding off the energy from the crowd.

17:07 , Giuseppe Muro

The noise inside the Puskas Arena is deafening when the home fans whistle. It’s all pretty surreal after the last 16 months we’ve had.

17:06 , Giuseppe Muro

5 mins: The first chance falls to Portugal. Jota stings the palms of Gulacsi with a strong left-foot shot from the edge of the area. Ronaldo is furious with his team-mate. He was in acres of space to his left if the Liverpool man had got his head up.

17:03 , Giuseppe Muro

2mins: An early touch for Ronaldo, who wins a throw in with a cheeky back heel attempt on the touchline. There’s a wry smile on his face as the crowd whistle. You sense the Portugal legend will enjoy playing in front of a full crowd again

Hungary are without their star player Dominik Szoboszlai, who has been ruled out of the tournament through injury.

They will rely on their front two of Adam Szalai and Roland Sallai to provide their attacking threat.

Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi had a spell at Liverpool but never played a senior game for them, and was loaned out to Hereford, Tranmere and Hull.

There has been plenty of talk in the build-up to the tournament about whether Cristiano Ronaldo is past his best.

The 36-year-old has not had his best season with Juventus but you can never write him off.

Ronaldo needs just one goal to become the all-time leading goalscoring in European Championship history, and you would not bet against him scoring that goal today.

This is the first game in Group F, which has been labelled “the group of death”.

World champions France, European champions Portugal and the previous World Cup winners Germany are all together with Hungary.

This is only the second major tournament where the world champions and the European champions will have met in the group stage.

The only other time that has happened was at Euro 1992, when the Netherlands met Germany.

The Puskas Arena in Budapest is set to be packed to the rafters this evening, as the stadium is the only venue that will be at full capacity for the tournament.

So how have Hungarian authorities managed to have a crowd of 61,000 in the midst of a global pandemic when the rest of the world is hosting events at a reduced capacity?

Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban sees the Euros as a tool to project his country’s image across Europe, and the Hungarian Football Federation put it down to the success of the country’s vaccine rollout.

Ronaldo quizzed over transfer links

15:03 , George Flood

Cristiano Ronaldo inevitably faced questions over his club future at yesterday’s pre-match press conference.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is entering the final 12 months of his lucrative contract at Juventus and has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and even a potential return to Manchester United.

But Ronaldo is unfazed by the speculation as he prepares to spearhead Portugal’s bid for a second successive European title.

“I’ve been playing at the highest level for many years so this doesn’t faze me at all. If I were 18 or 19 maybe I’d have some sleepless nights but I’m 36 years old and whatever comes next will be for the best, whether that’s staying at Juve or getting a transfer,” he said.

“The crucial thing now is the Euros. It’s my fifth Euros but for me it’s like my first so I want to start on the right foot - we want to play a good match and have only good thoughts in our first match to our last.”

Jota: Portugal won’t be weighed down by expectation

14:48 , George Flood

There is no shortage of pressure on Portugal this summer.

Not only are they the defending European champions, but they approach this tournament with a far better squad than the one that triumphed at Euro 2016.

However, Liverpool’s Diogo Jota insists they will not be hampered by the weight of expectation.

“It’s not an extra weight, it’s a huge pride for what happened in 2016 — it made us all proud,” he said.

“The opponents look at us differently and they want to defeat us. Hungary will have even more motivation to play at home, with a packed stadium, which we are not used to in the last year. We know the difficulties that entails and it is very important to start with a victory.”

Predicted lineups

Here’s how Standard Sport sees the two teams shaping up in Budapest this evening...

Portugal team news

14:31 , George Flood

Portugal were dealt a blow earlier this week after Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo was ruled out of the Euros after testing positive for Covid-19.

He was replaced in Fernando Santos’ tournament squad by Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot, who spent last season on loan at AC Milan.

Captain Cristiano Ronaldo says the Portuguese squad are not worried about potentially seeing further players contract the virus.

"I don't think it's a key factor. It's a shame Joao tested positive but everyone in our team is at peace, we don't talk about Covid-19 because we're all tired of this," he said on Monday.

“We know how to live with it and deal with it, it’s a sad situation but we’re all focused. For many players this is their first Euros and nothing will shake us.

“We respect all the rules but we’re just focused on playing, we’re not thinking about anything else at all.”

Standard Sport prediction

Hungary 1-2 Portugal

Hungary will be up against it versus a talented Portuguese squad, but have home advantage in Budapest.

Still, you’d expect the likes of Ronaldo, Jota or Fernandes to come good for three points.
