Pierce Lepage

Slurping the morning coffee on the couch Wednesday, I couldn’t help but marvel at the strength, endurance and versatility of Canada’s Damian Warner and the rest of the decathletes on display.

Most Olympic athletes are the masters of one or two events — congratulations to Andre De Grasse for his impressive bronze-gold medal feat — but tackling 10 track and field conquests over two days in the Tokyo heat? Here’s to considering the decathlon winner as the greatest overall athlete at the Games.

On that score, after the first day and five events of the competition, Warner sits at the top with 4,722 points, followed by Australia’s Ashley Moloney (4,641) and Canada’s Pierce LePage (4,529).

In the final event of day one of two, Warner ran the 400 metres in 47.48 seconds, picking up 934 points. Moloney’s time of 46.29 gave him 994 points and LePage’s sprint of 46.92 netted him 962 points. Warner is on target to win the gold and LePage is also in the running for a medal.

While clearly being the fastest, longest or highest in as many events as possible is the ticket to success, there’s plenty of number crunching involved for those casually trying to figure out who is leading whom and by how much in the race for the podium.

So, where do all these magical figures come from?

A warning here. If you have a few hours to spare, you can run down a rabbit hole reading about the history of the sport.

Before decathlon (ten events), pentathlon (five events), and heptathlon (seven events) were standardized around the world, some early versions of national and Olympic competitions included wrestling, an 880-metre run, a 55-foot rope climb and a 56-pound weight throw.

There’s also plenty of history behind the scoring system that can tie a mathematically-challenged brain in knots. Trust me. The International Association of Athletic Federation offers up a 182-page summary on the background behind the scoring tables.

In the first half of the 20 th century, there were American-led, Swedish-led and Finnish-led studies aimed at finding the best numerical way to measure competitors against each other.
