Canada’s nurses, doctors call for mandatory vaccinations for health-care workers
Two associations representing Canada’s physicians and nurses are calling for mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for health care workers.
The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) said making vaccination mandatory for health care workers would provide “an additional measure to protect patients, the health workforce and health care system capacity,” in a press release Tuesday.
“As health providers, we have a fundamental duty of care towards our patients and the public. There is significant evidence that vaccines are safe and effective and as health professionals who are leading the vaccination campaigns, it is the right call and an appropriate step,” said Dr. Ann Collins, CMA president, in the release.
Tim Guest, CNA president, noted “throughout this pandemic, health workers have been on the front lines and were among the first to get vaccinated. We need to maintain this trend and ensure that we take all the necessary steps to protect our patients and, of course, protect each other.”
The CMA and CNA are also calling on all levels of government and employers to implement strategies to remove barriers that may prevent people from accessing vaccines and improve vaccine acceptance.
