The United States men's national team added some hardware on Sunday, defeating Mexico 3-2 to become the inaugural champion of the CONCACAF Nations League. The triumph served as a bit of redemption for Team USA, who were denied a second straight CONCACAF Gold Cup title by the Mexicans in 2019. The USMNT will begin its quest to reclaim that championship next month, but first it will take on Costa Rica in an international friendly on Wednesday. The Americans last faced the Costa Ricans in a friendly on Feb. 1, 2020, when they came away with a 1-0 victory.© Provided by CBS Sports

Why you should back the United States
Team USA boasts a trio of budding young stars in midfielder Weston McKennie and forwards Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna. All three players scored in Sunday's triumph over Mexico, Pulisic in the 114th minute to snap a 2-2 deadlock. The 22-year-old from Pennsylvania has recorded 16 goals in 38 appearances with the national team and netted six in 43 matches for Chelsea across all competitions in 2020-21, including two in 10 games en route to the UEFA Champions League title.
Also 22, McKennie scored five goals in 34 contests for Juventus this past season and has recorded seven in 24 outings with the United States. The 18-year-old Reyna has netted three goals in seven games with the national team and is coming off a campaign with Borussia Dortmund during which he scored seven times in 46 matches. Hailing from New York, Reyna has soccer in his blood as he is the son of Claudio Reyna, a two-time U.S. Olympian, and Danielle Egan, who was a midfielder for the U.S. women's national team in 1993.
Why you should back Costa Rica
The Costa Ricans were dangerous in the CONCACAF Nations League, taking Mexico to penalty kicks before falling in the semifinals and suffering a similar fate against Honduras in the third-place game. Costa Rica has played solid defense in 2021, allowing fewer than two goals in seven of its nine contests. The squad has posted a pair of clean sheets in that span while yielding just one goal on five occasions.
After battling Mexico to a 0-0 draw in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals, Costa Rica scored twice versus Honduras, its best offensive showing since posting a 2-1 victory over Curacao in November 2019. Francisco Calvo scored in that victory and also scored against Honduras on Sunday, converting in the 85th minute to force penalty kicks. Costa Rica's other goal in the third-place game was recorded by Joel Campbell, who helped the team reach the final eight of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the semifinals of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
