Suns

The knock on Devin Booker was he put up numbers for a losing team as the Suns didn't make the playoffs in his first five seasons in Phoenix.

The numbers hardly changed this season.

Booker averaged 25.6 points, one fewer than his career high for a season, in this NBA-shortened 72-game regular season. He still shot 48% like last season and actually averaged fewer turnovers than his previous three seasons.

Along with Chris Paul, Booker led the Suns to the second-best record in the NBA, but remains an All-NBA snub.

Booker and Utah Jazz All-Star Donovan Mitchell are the only two out of 45 players since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976 to average 25-plus points on a team that finished the regular season with one of the NBA’s top two records and not earn All-NBA first or second team.

"That's pretty much a joke," Suns coach Monty Williams said earlier this week.

However, Booker continues to get the last laughs.

Still playing

The Suns reached the conference finals faster than anyone else this year.

Three of the six guards who made All-NBA were eliminated in the first round — Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks), Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers) and Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards).

One didn't even make the postseason after failing to make it out of the play-in tournament – Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors).

The other two are Paul and Kyrie Irving, who unfortunately is out with an ankle injury as the Brooklyn Nets face a Game 7 Saturday at home against the Milwaukee Bucks.

"It feels great," Booker said after Game 4 closeout win in Denver. "It's hard to put into words, but this is what I've trained for, this is what I've prepared for. I don't work out in the summer thinking that my season is going to be over after 82 games."

Committed to represent USA

Booker will be an Olympian this summer in Tokyo.

Sources confirmed Friday to The Republic that Booker has committed to Team USA's 12-man roster for the 2021 Summer Olympics.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted the news earlier Friday afternoon.

Back in 2019 when NBA players were opting out of representing Team USA in the FIBA World Cup, Booker seemed like an ideal candidate to suit up.

However, Team USA director Jerry Colangelo said Booker’s agent advised him earlier that summer Booker wanted to focus on getting healthy and ready for the 2019-20 season.

Two years later, Booker will represent America in the Summer Olympics.

"I know he's excited," Suns wing Mikal Bridges said. "I'm happy for him to get that invite, to be known as one of the top players. So I'm happy for him."

'Need mans info'

Booker has also drawn national news for reaching out via Twitter to Suns fan Nick McKellar, who exchanged blows with a Nuggets fan near the end of Game 3 of the conference finals at Ball Arena in Denver.

Booker's CAA representatives tracked down McKellar, who lives in Denver, through social media, and the lifelong Suns fans will receive tickets to a game in the conference finals and an autographed Booker jersey.

This move has been praised by some, criticized by others, but Suns point guard Cameron Payne said it's cool Booker reached out to the fan.

"Everybody needs to just have fun at the games, man," Payne said. "We're out there having fun. So they should, too."

Throughout the playoffs, Booker has talked about having fun with it.

Not to say that's why he reached out to "Suns in 4" fan.

Booker hasn't been made available to answer questions about it yet, but Booker is truly enjoying his first postseason experience.

He's getting the last laughs, too.
