A Euro 2020 host who went viral for a Basic Instinct-style wardrobe malfunction has said the comparisons to the racy movie are "exaggerated."

Paola Ferrari, an Italian soccer pundit, caused a stir this week when she inadvertently flashed audiences while on live television.

The Euro 2020 host has been likened to Sharon Stone in the 1992 film Basic Instinct after she crossed her legs in a dress while facing the camera, leaving shocked viewers wondering if she was wearing underwear.

The 60-year-old has responded to assure soccer fans she was indeed wearing underwear unlike Stone's character in the movie, saying she "prefers health and hygiene."

"It has gone viral, they are using more VAR [video assistant referee] (for this incident) than on the field at the European Championships," she said.

"It happened but it's nothing serious."

Ferrari also dismissed the Basic Instinct comparison.

"It's a bit of a stretch, as [Stone] is one of the sexiest women in the world," Ferrari said, per The Sun.

"In short, the viral video seems a bit exaggerated, I presented two evenings with pants," she said. "Sharon Stone was not wearing underwear in that scene. I on the other hand prefer to protect health and hygiene."

She also referenced football fans who suggested they could see an intimate tattoo of a butterfly during the viral moment.

"I can assure you that I do not have a tattooed butterfly, I do not fly so high," she said.

The journalist has been a regular contributor on Italy's national broadcaster RAI since the 1990s.

Basic Instinct is due to turn 30 next year and Stone has recently spoken about how she was tricked into the infamous interrogation scene.

"Some years ago I was sitting on a sound stage, and my director said, 'Can you hand me your underpants because we're seeing them in the scene and you shouldn't have underpants on, but we won't see anything,'" she said at the GQ Awards in 2019.

After asking the audience to copy her leg cross, she asked: "Do you feel empowered? Maybe not."

Stone also made headlines this week for saying that Viola Davis is just as good an actress as Meryl Streep in a recent interview.

"But in my opinion, quite frankly, there are other actresses equally as talented as Meryl Streep," she said in an interview with Everything Zoomer. "The whole Meryl Streep iconography is part of what Hollywood does to women."

"Viola Davis is every bit the actress Meryl Streep is. Emma Thompson. Judy Davis. Olivia Colman. Kate Winslet, for f***'s sake. But you say Meryl and everybody falls on the floor," she added.
