Local professional baseball scout Tom Myers has started a summer baseball league for area high school ballplayers to sharpen their skills and showcase their talents to play at the next level.
The Golden Coast Wood Bat High School Summer League kicked off its inaugural season two weeks ago with the seven teams.
The Coastal Cubs, Santa Barbara Junior Foresters, Dos Pueblos Knights, Bakersfield Braves, Bakersfield Crude, San Luis Obispo Phillies and California Bucs out of Ventura will play a season of games, have an all-star game and a championship series to round out the summer.
Santa Barbara High, San Marcos, Bishop Diego, Cate, Carpinteria, Dunn and Santa Ynez are among the county high schools that have players participating in the league.
The high school league is an addition to the Gold Coast Collegiate League, which enters its second year of competition on the Central Coast.
“Both leagues are vehicles for Central Coast players to play competitive baseball, sharpen their baseball skills and showcase their talent for colleges throughout the country,” said Myers, the area scout for the Chicago Cubs and the general manager of the Santa Barbara Grizzlies Baseball Group.
The college league features nine teams: Coastal Cubs, Santa Maria Packers, So Cal Hitmen, Oxnard Sharks, Bakersfield Braves, California Bucs, Ventura Pirates, California Gold Sox and Team Victory.
The teams are comprised of players from NCAA Division 1 and 2, NAIA and community college programs from throughout the state.
Among the local high school graduated seniors playing in the college league are UCSB-bound Henry Manfredonia (San Marcos) Oliver McGibben (SBHS), who is headed to University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, and Aiden Johnson (San Marcos) will continue his career at SBCC.
Myers said the GCCL will be staging an All-Star Game and Championship Series at Westmont College.
