REAL MADRID 5, BASEL 1

Real Madrid put their La Liga woes behind them to get their defence of the Champions League off to a flying start with a 5-1 hammering of Basel today.

The hosts, who had suffered a second consecutive league defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid at the weekend, went in front thanks to Marek Suchy’s own goal and then struck three times in six minutes to end the game as a contest.

Gareth Bale finished off a lovely move involving Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo before Ronaldo and James Rodriguez tapped home from close range.

Derlis Gonzalez pulled a goal back for the visitors moments later, but Karim Benzema rounded off the scoring for Real with a thumping finish late on.

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti resisted calls for widespread changes following his side’s third defeat in six games this season with full-backs Marcelo and Nacho the only new faces from the side that started against Atletico.

However, Nacho had a big role to play in the opening goal on 14 minutes as he raced onto Rodriguez’s lovely backheel and fired in a low cross that Suchy could only direct into his own net.

Basel skipper Marco Streller nearly levelled immediately as he drilled into the side-netting from a narrow angle.

Bale registered his second goal of the season when he was set free by a wonderful through ball by Modric with the outside of his foot and the Welshman lobbed the ball over the advancing Vaclik before slotting home.

It was 3-0 moments later when Modric fed Bale once more and this time he squared for Ronaldo to finish.

And Rodriguez rounded off his most encouraging display since sealing a big-money move from Monaco as the World Cup’s top scorer was left with a simple task after Vaclik could only parry Benzema’s initial effort.

Basel stuck to their task impressively and responded with a goal of real quality as Luca Zuffi picked out Gonzalez’s run and the Paraguayan arrowed a shot across Iker Casillas and into the far corner.

Real showed their quality in the final third 11 minutes from time when Benzema and Ronaldo exchanged passes before the Frenchman smashed a shot in off the crossbar.

JUVENTUS 2, MALMO 0

Carlos Tevez broke his Champions League duck as he scored twice to lead Juventus to a hard-fought 2-0 victory at home to Malmo in their opening Group A fixture.

Juventus struggled at times before Tevez broke the deadlock in the 59th, following good interplay with Kwadwo Asamoah.

It was the Argentina forward’s first goal in Europe’s elite club competition in more than five years ago.

Tevez then sealed the result in stoppage time with a well-placed free kick that sailed into the top corner.

The Bianconeri dominated possession against the Swedish minnows, but failed to create many clear cut opportunities, and it was Malmo which almost took the lead in the first half.

OLYMPIAKOS 3, ATLETICO MADRID 2

Atletico Madrid slipped to a surprise 3-2 defeat to Olympiakos in a disappointing return to the Champions League for last season’s finalist.

Atletico fell behind in the 13th minute of the Group A match when defender Arthur Masuaku aimed a left-footed drive past goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who was making his debut for the Spanish club.

Striker Kostas Mitroglou unselfishly left the ball to Imbrahim Afellay who made in 2-0 in the 31st. But Mario Mandzukic pulled a goal back before the break, left unmarked to head in a cross from Cristian Ansaldi.

Mitroglou scored what proved to be the winner in the 73rd, turning on the ball to beat Oblak, before substitute Antoine Griezmann found the net in the 86th for Atletico.

BENFICA 0, ZENIT ST PETERSBURG 2

Hulk and Axel Witsel scored first-half goals to give Zenit St. Petersburg a 2-0 win against 10-man Benfica in their opening Champions League Group C game.

Hulk put Zenit ahead in the fifth minute. The Brazilian striker was unmarked on the right when he received a pass from Oleg Shatov and curled the ball past Artur.

The Benfica goalkeeper was sent off in the 18th after obstructing Danny, and Witsel extended Zenit’s lead with a glancing header at the front post in the 22nd.

Zenit, the Russian league leader with seven wins from seven, was in sharp form and looked a more complete team than its Portuguese opponent.

Benfica, the defeated Europa League finalist in the past two seasons, came close to scoring through Luisao and Lima.

Joao Moutinho scored against the run of the play as Monaco recovered from a terrible start to beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 in their Champions League Group C opener.

Moutinho broke the deadlock in the 61st minute from former Leverkusen striker Dimitar Berbatov’s assist as the Bundesliga leaders were made to pay for their profligacy.

Roger Schmidt’s side was in complete control and created the best chances but Monaco’s defence remained resolute, before Moutinho ended the visitors’ unbeaten run in all competitions this season with his first shot on target.

The win gave some respite to Monaco, which lost Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez and former France international Eric Abidal over the summer, and has also endured a miserable start in the French league.

Galatasary snatched a late draw thanks to Burak Yilmaz, after Dennis Praet scored the opener for the Belgian visitors in the 52nd minute.
